Technology

The iHelp Desk is the main walk-up technology support location for students and staff at Saint Joe High School and serves as the hub for the school’s technology services. Parents, students, and staff can receive timely, in-person help with questions or issues related to school-issued devices. The Technology Director and Lead Technician work out of the iHelp Desk, allowing concerns to be addressed quickly and directly. The purpose of the iHelp Desk is to keep technology running smoothly so classroom instruction remains uninterrupted.

Saint Joseph High School is a 1:1 laptop school. Every student is issued a school-owned Macbook that is brought to each class. The integration of technology in the high school classroom improves student learning outcomes when used intentionally and prepares students for future studies and careers.

Purposeful Digital Integration

The goal of our 1:1 environment is to enhance student learning, not to simply replace pen and paper. We still value lessons that are minds-on and engage students without the use of technology, employing strategies including direct instruction, Socratic seminars, and labs. Throughout the school day, students handwrite notes and complete many assignments using analog tools. 

Digital platforms and tools are used when it elevates student learning and engagement. Our 1:1 laptop program allows teachers to craft learning experiences that use various digital platforms and tools to:

• Assess student learning in real time
• Provide immediate feedback on work
• Differentiate instruction and assignments
• Provide opportunities for student collaboration
• Facilitate authentic, project-based learning experiences

Common tools that students use to gain access to information, process information, and display what they know include GoogleDocs, GoogleSlides, DeltaMath, Edpuzzle, and Quizlet. Additionally, students are provided with a managed Google account including email, allowing for improved communication with teachers, and a Canvas account, allowing for improved access to course information and curricular materials. Many courses utilize eTextbooks as a supplemental course material. These are the same platforms that are used by universities throughout the country, giving students the opportunity to gain fluency with the tools and a robust Learning Management System.

Management and Responsibility

Teachers are able to use Securly Classroom, a laptop management tool, to ensure students remain focused while laptops are being used. In most scenarios, when teachers are facilitating more traditional instructional methods, students close their laptops so they are not a distraction to learning. Students are provided with training on how to use their laptop when they enroll at Saint Joe, including guidelines for responsible use of the device in and out of the classroom.
