Curriculum

The Saint Joe curriculum incorporates values-based education across all subjects, and strives to be a diverse Catholic community engaged in preparing students to lead exemplary lives sharing wisdom, showing courage, and promoting justice in the world.

Program of Studies

The Program of Studies includes information on registration, graduation requirements, course designations, and a complete list of all courses offered at Saint Joseph High School.

Saint Joe offers over 45 Advanced Placement and Honors courses for students showing exceptional interest and ability in a particular subject. Saint Joe offers many electives that help students explore their passions. We have language education, full offerings from our Music Department, as well as visual art classes. In addition to requirements set by the State of Indiana, Saint Joe has local requirements including 8 semesters of Theology. The variety of courses allows Saint Joe to achieve our mission of educating the whole person.

Academic Support Departments

Media Center (Library)

In the heart of our building, adjacent to the Commons, the Media Center exists as a gathering place for students, teachers, and visitors and a hub for continued learning.

In addition to the physical books housed in the library, students and teachers alike can use the Sora app to access audio novels for classes and see the expanded library of books available to us beyond the school's walls.

The Media Center space provides support for teachers in the form of additional study rooms within the library, as well as the main library serving as additional academic space.

Librarian and Media Specialist Mrs. Leslie Brenner maximizes the use of the Saint Joe Media Center by hosting book fairs and other academic events/activities throughout the year.

Learning Strategies

The Learning Strategies program is designed to assist diverse learners in the achievement of their educational goals. We provide support to students who meet eligibility criteria due to medical conditions, specific learning disabilities, mild cognitive disabilities, and/or other health impairments. We also provide support to English Language Learners.

For students meeting the eligibility criteria, Learning Strategies works with students, parents, and teachers to develop an Individual Service Plan (ISP) or a Catholic Accommodation Plan (CAP) that provides accommodations to best meet the individual student's academic needs.

Although all students are instructed with their peers in general education classrooms, the Learning Strategies Department also offers a Learning Strategies class, which is designed to support learning in the core classes.

Bilingual Department

Bilingual Department: "Connecting Cultures. Empowering Futures."

The Bilingual Department serves to ensure language never stands in the way of learning, belonging, or success. We support students, families, and staff by providing interpretation, translation, cultural guidance, and academic support that embrace diversity and honor the richness of every language and heritage in our school community.

Additional support services

Flex Period

Saint Joe implements unique block-scheduling with classes meeting every other day and incorporating a "Flex period." Flex period is used for school functions such as Masses, pep rallies, assemblies, prayer services, etc. Students are responsible for checking the school calendar to know when Flex Periods will meet and what activities will take place. All students will be expected to participate in any and all events/activities requiring their presence.

When there is not a specific activity, Flex period is to be used for studying, homework, and academic support. Students are expected to bring school work to their classroom and will use the period for academic purposes unless otherwise directed by the teacher. Students are encouraged to take advantage of faculty office hours during Flex Period for extra help, to ask questions, and to makeup tests, quizzes, etc.

For 9th grade students, Flex periods include the P.A.C.K. Program and the Preparing for College and Career course. These consist of mini-lessons and assignments to teach skills, habits, and dispositions that will help students adjust and be successful in high school and beyond. The lessons are delivered collaboratively by the Flex teachers and our peer mentors. These 11th and 12th graders act as mentors for the 9th graders in their Flex period, as well.

Tutoring

The National Honor Society offers drop-in tutoring to any Saint Joe student who wants or needs help with a variety of subjects. This can be a one-time meeting or ongoing help throughout the year. Tutoring is available for the following subjects: English, Math (Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calc/Trig), Science (Basic Science, Biology, Chemistry), Spanish, and Theology.
