The Indiana State Championship is a tournament intended to match the best quiz bowl teams from around the state. Each of the leagues qualifies one-half of its membership for the Championship.

NOTE: As of 2008, this works out to be 33 teams: Duneland 5/10, Quad County 3/7, Skill Bowl 4/8, St. Joseph Valley 5/10, Tippecanoe Valley 2/4, and White River 14/28. As an even number of teams is desirable, an at-large invitation may be extended at the discretion of the State Quiz Bowl Board.

The Indiana State Championship uses the unabridged four-quarter format detailed at Questions Unlimited, with the following clarifications/modifications (in italics):

CLARIFICATION TO THIRD QUARTER RULE #5: The 60-second clock is started immediately before the first question is asked.

The Indiana State Championship uses a tournament format modeled on the National Academic Championship, with the following clarifications/modifications (in italics):

FORMAT RULE #1: Each team competing in the tournament shall be guaranteed three matches in the preliminary rounds. The first round will pair random teams from opposing leagues, and subsequent rounds will be paired using the "Swiss System", i.e. teams with the same record will be paired. Pairings will be made in advance using a spreadsheet, with entries such as "Winner Room 101 vs. Winner Room 102".

FORMAT RULE #2: After the preliminary rounds all the teams will be ranked using the following criteria in order: (1) total wins; then (2) total points scored; then (3) points scored from the three games from highest to lowest. The highest eight teams will qualify for the playoffs. For the playoffs, the teams will be seeded by those rankings into a standard quarterfinals/semifinals/finals bracket.

FORMAT RULE #3: Teams should arrive in the assigned rooms 10 minutes before the matches begin. If a team arrives 10 minutes past game time, it automatically forfeits unless the team has been delayed by other matches or tournament procedures. Should an odd number of teams compete in any preliminary round of the tournament, it will be necessary for one team in that round to have a bye. Teams that win by a forfeit will receive a score equal to the average of their other scores.

MODIFICATION OF PARTICIPANTS RULES #5-6: Coaches are responsible for the behavior of their team members. Acts of vandalism or disruption may result in a team's forfeiture of matches or ejection from the tournament without refund, at the tournament director's discretion.

MODIFICATION OF OFFICIALS RULES #5-6: If a team coach (not a student) is not satisfied with an official's decision during a match, that coach may submit an appeal to the tournament director. The opposing coach will be allowed to submit a counter-appeal. The tournament director may or may not consult a panel of judges. All decisions by the tournament director/judges will be final. For such an appeal, teams are allowed one throughout the whole of the preliminary elimination rounds (i.e. not one per match) and one throughout the course of the playoffs.
